Teachers forgo time off for Year 12s

Teachers forgo time off for Year 12s

Bethany Hyatt Education Editor - The West Australian

As Year 12 exams loom, teachers at a Bunbury school are going above and beyond their usual duties to ensure their students are as ready as they can be.

Ten teachers at Manea Senior College gave up a chunk of their school holidays to run free exam preparation seminars.

Maths teacher and curriculum manager Simon Cox said staff recognised many students wanted extra revision but could not afford to attend seminars readily available to city students because of travel and accommodation costs on top of tutoring.

He said teachers were told they did not have to give up their holidays, but he was impressed so many volunteered to run the week of half-day seminars.

"Teachers are, on the whole, pretty dedicated, I think," Mr Cox said.

He said the holiday revision helped keep the Year 12s focused and provided some last-minute practice and exam strategies before they sat their mock exams last week.

"All those things that teachers like to do and students like to get, but you can't squeeze it into the four hours a week," Mr Cox said.

Almost all the school's 100 students who are studying university entrance level courses signed up for at least one subject.

WA Certificate of Education exams start on November 3 with physics.

*Simon would like to also thank Year 12 student Travis P for running the AIT Revision Seminar!
